TheKing

TheKing - 05/29/06 07:16 PM

So today I'm checking my computer, which I do, clear cookies, adware, spyware, etc..

I open Windows Task Manager and I see three instances of

TheKing.exe

Running in the background.

I closed them all down, ran another spyware sweep.

Anyhow I'm continuing to check my computer, but this is the only forums where I'm aware of someone with the handle TheKing.

Coincidence? I don't know, anyone else notice anything odd? I suggest you check.

Has nothing to do with me.

Re: TheKing - 05/29/06 07:21 PM

I sure hope so.

Whatever it is, I have a pretty good system to avoid "oddities" and I was kind of surprised to see this. I'm going to continue checking.

I'm not a big fan of coincidence, especially when the internet is involved.

Re: TheKing - 05/29/06 07:23 PM

If I was going to put spyware on your pc do you think I would use my XPT handle as the name of the program? I'm dumb but not that dumb.

Re: TheKing - 05/29/06 08:54 PM

Yeah, no one has ever heard of the nickname "The king" before XPT. Clearly this guy is behind it.

Re: TheKing - 05/30/06 06:27 AM

Coincidence? I visited XPT in the AM, poked around a few news websites and then I start checking my computer. This is the only website I visit where I see that handle, and yes I've run into dumb hackers. I still can't explain what happened because I can't find malicious spy-ware. (registry clean, no odd cookies, no ad-ware)

But in the future if I come across something suspicious I won't bother to advise anyone, no one else need check their computers, go on about your business as if nothing happened. Heaven forbid I should find an oddity on my computer and then advise others to check theirs just because I visited a porn related website. We all know that Porn-sites never use spy-ware, ad-ware, etc.. no pop-ups, they are the example of internet virtue. Why the internet is so safe, no one ever tries to get malicious software into other peoples computers.

I'm sorry, go about your business, don't ever worry about what's going on on the internet, it's all safe and harmless.

Uh, you wouldn't happen to play chess would you? TheKing.exe seems to be the Chessmaster 8000 engine.

Re: TheKing - 05/30/06 08:23 AM

I have chessmaster 10th Edition which wasn't running at the time? Why would three instances of it be running at once?

Like I said other than checking and seeing three instances of this running, I haven't found anything wrong. It was a strange coincidence, and what immediately came to mind was that I had visited here.

Got say thanks to have2cit, I went to Ubi and read around their website and found a patch that had this to say.

Quote:

Unfortunately, every once in a while a bug can cause a program to "crash", shutting it down immediately. Because Chessmaster 10th Edition now uses the Winboard protocol for all of its chess engines, these engines are actually SEPARATE programs that constantly communicate with the Chessmaster main program. While Chessmaster automatically closes all the King instances upon crashing, there are still very rare instances when these engine processes may still be running "in the background," and may still be churning away on the current game, taking up your computer's memory and CPU time. The only way to shut these engines down is to access the Windows Task Manager (usually by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL) and looking for the name of the chess engine program that is still running. Chessmaster 10th Edition's engine is called "TheKing". You would then highlight any entry in the program list that is called "TheKing", and press the "End Task" button.
Also, if you happen to close Chessmaster by using the Windows Task Manager, be aware that the King's engine will NOT be removed automatically. You have to look for any entry in the program list that is called "TheKing", and press the "End Task" button.

So I downloaded the patch and will see if this clears it up.

That is a really weird coincidence.

How long has "TheKing" used that handle, perhaps he can sue Ubisoft? It's just like that in the game "TheKing" capital T capital K, no space.

I thought it was an Elvis Reference.

if the process failed to close on three previous instances, you will have 3 instances of TheKing.exe running at once. You should look at why it failed to close. Check the KB at the software manufacturers site or email their support, most likely they have run into the same problem before.

sorry advice too late

Be happy that it didn't involve you, but I have run into "Idiot Hackers" before and I think it's better to make people aware than to leave them out.

Say it wasn't some file called "TheKing" and it was malicious and people got it via this forum, and I found out it, and I didn't tell anyone.

People go around unawares with some crap on their computer, God knows what it's doing.

My thoughts are better safe than sorry, when someone could be downloading your account blances, bank codes, credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc..

Of course the government recently gave my info out for free to someone, but that's just the way George Bush runs the Government.

I've also been in over 80 fights, was outnumbered in most of them.

Nope, I'm ambivalent. Call me quick on the trigger if you must, I've had experiences where guys tried to crack into my computer. I used to play an online war game and guys were always trying to break into other guys systems, they had all sorts of programs to try and get by firewalls etc.. It was common practice to notify the community as soon as you found or detected something, so others could check their systems.

This is honestly the first experience I've been involved in where the circumstances are innocent.

If you desire an apology, I will gladly give one up. You are innocent of any malfiescence that I can detect on my system. I saw something unexplained on my computer and reacted as I have become accustomed to acting in such circumstances. Personally I would rather be warned if someone picked up something via this website, that was my intent.

The initial drama is risibly dead. So where did you acquire your name. For some reason, I like to think it's becauyse Rupert Pupkin used "The King" as his alias when he kidnapped Johnny Carson, but I'm probably wrong.
