Luke Ford's new book: "Lives on the Edge" new
      #176739 - 08/11/06 10:25 PM

Luke has published his latest book. It appears to be a collection of pornstar/porn-player interviews. I bought it and intend to give it a read over the weekend.

Check it out

There's not a summation or thesis of any kind? Just lazily collated interviews with the mind what produced them looking back and pondering it all in some way? Does he reckon the cumulative effect of these monotonies speak for itself? I've got nothing against Mr. Ford, but I expected more from him. Like how Cameron Crowe masqueraded as a high schooler to gether material for 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High'.

I've read the book. It may be unsatisfying to some because it does not offer a summary chapter that ties everything into a neat package. Instead it offers chapter after chapter of delusional pornstars and players peppered with Lukes dry commentary.

The big finish is his relationship with Holly Randall in 80 or so pages. It's explicit enough for most porn fans but it also deals with the more mundane aspects of a relationship as well as the underlying reasons as to why it must fail. The chapter on Holly seems misplaced, but I'm not sure it needed anymore than the treatment it received.

I liked the book. Don't know that it will make the NYT bestseller list but it was worth my money.

(Do not pm me asking me to email you the .pdf file- I don't play that way)

I might just go ahead and splurge on the damned thing, out of curiosity.

It's only 6 bucks- you can't go wrong. Spend the money, skip a lunch and spend the time reading.

I had a daydream that Norman Mailer did a write up on Mr. Ford's booklet in 'The New York Review of Books'. My mind didn't flesh out Mailer's specific comments, but I got an idea that he was very enthusiastic and fascinated by the subject and was intrigued by Mr. Ford's minimal approach to insinuate his person into the book more agressively, speculating that he either has a higjly evolved and sophisticated ego or that he is a terrifyingly empty human being and thus understandably drawn to such subject matter.

Yeah that chapter on me isn't too flattering-- Luke sent me the chapter beforehand for my approval. Though I obviously wasn't thrilled about the way I was depicted I have always respected Luke's need to write what he wants, and as an amatuer writer myself I cannot bring myself to demand that he edit his work for my benefit. Also, like most people, I don't enjoy seeing my shortcomings glorified on paper. But I suppose that's what I get for having those shortcomings. I believe in writing the truth, and when I write my own book someday (yes, me and everyone else is writing a book, I know) I would prefer to not hold anything back and be perfectly honest myself. It won't win me a lot of friends, but I think that a good autobiography is truthful, and along those lines, often painful.
